New York Family Office Aviation

Family offices in New York arrange a great deal of flying, and most of it follows a pattern the office already knows well. Jet Charter NYC works with whoever handles that travel, whether that is a dedicated aviation lead, an executive assistant or a member of the family.

The trips a New York household makes

For many families the year starts and ends in Palm Beach, with flights back and forth from November through April. Summer brings the Hamptons, usually out on Thursday and back on Sunday. The holidays bring ski trips to Aspen, Vail or Jackson. Add school visits, a principal’s business travel and staff flying ahead to open a house, and the calendar fills up quickly.

Most Manhattan households leave from Teterboro. Families in Westchester and Greenwich usually start at Westchester County Airport in White Plains, and the Long Island Gold Coast flies from Republic or Long Island MacArthur. We keep each family’s usual airports, aircraft preferences and catering notes on file, so a request in March does not start from scratch because the last trip was in August.

Privacy for the family

We only share passenger names and itineraries with the operator and the crew assigned to the flight. Children, guests and household staff are handled with the same discretion as the principals. Your office deals with the same advisor from one trip to the next, so fewer people need to know the family’s plans.

When the family owns an aircraft

Some offices own an aircraft and still call us. The airplane goes in for scheduled maintenance, a mechanical problem grounds it away from home, or two family members need to be in different places on the same day. We arrange a chartered aircraft for those trips, subject to scheduling and aircraft availability, so the family can keep its plans.

If the family is thinking about buying or selling an aircraft, we can help with that too. A season or two of charter records will also show how often the family actually flies and on which routes, which is useful to know before that decision. Offices that run their own aircraft with a full flight department can read how we provide flight department back-up.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.

New York-Specific Patterns We Plan Around

New York has more airports to choose from than almost any other city, and the right one depends on where you are starting from on the ground. Teterboro, about eight miles from Midtown, is usually the closest to Manhattan and has a 100,000 lb operating-weight limit, Westchester County Airport in White Plains suits Westchester and Greenwich, and Republic and MacArthur serve Long Island. LaGuardia, JFK and Newark take private flights too, but each needs a reservation or approval under an FAA order, so we usually start elsewhere. Several of these airports can clear a flight arriving from abroad. Air traffic control delays reach the business-aviation airports as well as the airline ones, and from roughly November through March, de-icing can add time to a departure.
